The Horse Protection Society was founded in 1984 by Melva McLean (now deceased). Melva began the Society after hearing a report about an appalling situation on Barnston Island. A pilot had flown over a field containing a number of horses. A few didn’t look bad, some were in poor condition, but the pilot could see at least four skeletons and one decaying horse carcass lying in a ditch. HPS now works to educate the public regarding proper horse care and have plans to sponsor Safe Trailering and Horse Care 101 Clinics in the future. The Society actively searches for good homes for horses that have been abused or mistreated, and sometimes sponsor a difficult case as well.
SuitsUs2 Stables offers a temporary home for some rescue horses while a suitable permanent home can be found. Sometimes a horse may be in need of some extra care or attention, and may just take some time to assess before placing. Our boarders often chip in to help with chores and extra expenses, they are a fabulous bunch! Since space is limited here, we try to get them on the mend and then find a home for them, to make room for the next needy soul. It is our policy to check on the homes from time to time, just to make sure our charges are being well looked after, and sadly, we have had to bring one or two back for re-placing. Horse Protection Society realizes that often times the future value of a horse lies in the training so we raise funds for professional trainers to put the hours into making sure these horses have the best possible chances for a bright future.
Horse Protection Society of BC is a registered, non-profit organization. Funds raised go directly to the horses. A tax receipt can be issued for all donations of $10 or more.
